The Classes

In the gurukulam tradition, a student learned at the guru’s side, one at a time. We teach the same way: one teacher, one student, face to face, every week.

Student per class

1

Every minute of every class is your child’s.

  • A plan for the week

Every class ends with a short practice plan, so ten minutes a day at home is never a guess.

  • The traditional way

Bharatanatyam as it is taught in Chennai: the Kalakshetra and Vazhuvoor styles, with the theory behind every step.

  • First class free

Come and meet us. We watch your child move, and plan from there.

  • A slot that fits

After school or a weekend morning. We plan around school, not the other way round.

  • On stage early

Children learn by performing. Small stages in the first year, bigger ones as they grow.

  • Reasonable fees

Fees stay reasonable. This is about passing the dance on.

The Journey

The arangetram, a dancer’s solo debut, usually comes after six to ten years of training. Our teachers have taken students there in three to five.*

Years of training before the arangetram

*Every child is different. Age, practice and dedication set the pace.

Same slot, every week

How the years come down

Thirty minutes a week, one-on-one. Short and regular beats long and rare, in dance as in music or math.

Attention
A child can give thirty minutes their whole attention, so every minute is spent dancing.
Correction
A wrong angle is fixed the moment it appears, before it becomes a habit.
Rhythm
The same slot every week, a little practice in between, and progress compounds.
Room to grow
When a student is ready for more, the class becomes an hour. Age, stamina and schedule decide that, with you.

Three to five years is not a shortcut. It is what happens when no class is wasted.

What a student learns, in order

  1. The basicsAdavus: steps, posture and rhythm
  2. First dancesAlarippu and Jatiswaram
  3. The big piecesVarnam, Padam and Tillana
  4. ArangetramThe solo debut
  5. And beyondPerformances, productions and bigger stages

Who It Is For

All levels welcome. Ages 5 and up.

  • Never danced before

We start from the first adavu. No one at home needs to know the dance.

  • Already learning

Join alongside what your child does now, or move over fully. We pick up from where they are.

  • A teenager getting serious

It is not too late. One-on-one, teenagers catch up fast.

  • Already performing

Advanced training for productions and bigger stages.

The teachers

From New Jersey. Trained under leading gurus.

Our teachers are performing dancers, trained in Chennai under legendary gurus in both the Kalakshetra and Vazhuvoor styles. They grew up here, learning this dance between school and homework, so they know exactly how to teach it to a child in New Jersey.

For college
They studied at US universities and know how to present years of dance on an application.
For the stage
They perform in the US and know how productions and arts grants work.
